Koolhaas

This is a really neat looking hat and a real bitch to knit. It was definitely one of those projects that get a huge sigh of relief after I weave in the ends.

The crown is not great but it will do.

7 years together

Last Friday I made the difficult decision to euthanize Ichabod, a bearded dragon I have had for 7 years.

I took him to the vet, for the third time in two months. Hoping whatever was wrong could be treated. The first vet I saw gave me the impression that it was something that could be fixed. Simple, like an eye infection. When he kept getting worse and I requested ending his suffering I was treated as if I had not done enough, that I was not willing to do more for him. I left that place angry and in tears, but I continued to force feed him daily so he would not slowly starve to death before I could get a second opinion.

The next vet I saw said it was either his heart or some other catastrophic organ problem. He told me there were tests that could be done but he was very honest with me when I asked if he would recover. He told me that it was very unlikely and even if he did turn around a little that it would be short. He was around 8 years old, maybe a little older than that.

This is his story. He was so special to me.

In 2004 a friend came over and said "Hey, you like lizards! I know someone trying to get rid of a big one"

I got a little more information about him (all of it was wrong)

My roommate and I went to go check him out and once we saw how he was being kept we immediately agreed to take him. We only had basic knowledge of their care at the time, but he was clearly in need of assistance.

They had him living in an old coca cola refrigerator with no ventilation or appropriate lighting. He was deformed. The enclosure STUNK of feces and was full of it. He was dirty and skinny. We took him to a vet and the vet was pretty horrified at his condition, he was full of parasites and his bones were rubbery and malformed from MBD. He had never seen a UV source in his life. He never even had a bulb for warmth to bask.

Anyway, I have had him since then. For a long time he was my only pet. I doted on him and made sure he had everything he needed. I built him special ramps to make his tank more interactive. I grew greens for him at home. My boyfriend built him an amazing custom tank stand. He swam and I know it's rare, but he actually drank from standing water. He loved it. I always had to put water in the bottom of his salads so he could drink and he would puff up and flatten out his body while he lapped up the water.

I have a few pictures of him from over the years that I've been looking at today. It makes me happy to remember him healthy, and not like he has been lately.

My favorite picture of him. Healthy and FAT, after his first (and only) brumation

Holding him in the animal hospital. Sharing a moment before I let him go

He will be missed.

Down to the ocean

Some friends have a family beach house in Virginia Beach, and they were kind enough to invite us to join them. We went a few years ago but this year it was a full week. A full week of awesome. The house was beautiful. I spent a lot of time sitting on the roof or the main balcony and just watching the ocean and reading. It was peaceful and relaxing. The weather could not have been more perfect, except for the day we woke up to the smell of smoke and learned that wildfires in North Carolina had sent massive smoke clouds up the coast. The forecast for that day literally read "Smokey", but by the afternoon it had cleared out. Now, for pictures!

I didn't take many pictures of the inside of the house but I had to take one of the custom dolphin light box. Magnificent!

I finished this beautiful shawl on the fourth day. The yarn is called Chesapeake, by Blue Heron. It is the color of the ocean and the pattern edges look like waves.

While we were there I read the book "Never Let me Go". It was a great read and the story was very sad and thought provoking.

We played Mini golf and walked the board walk. On Wednesday I wanted to find something to do so we found a tattoo place and I got an industrial ear piercing

Group picture

There was only one day that I didn't go down to the beach to lay in the sand and swim. We ate in a few nights. One night I made crab cakes with hush puppies and the last night before the long drive we grilled out on the patio.

In the evenings after dinner we would walk on the beach. The last night we actually made it out there before dark. Two nights while I was out on the balcony I caught some fireworks from the hotels down toward the boardwalk. We ran up to the roof and watched the show. I had such a wonderful trip and coming home was such a downer. Coming home after some vacations was a welcome relief but this trip was different. I wanted to stay there and live on the beach.

Tomorrow I'm returning to work. Back to the grind.

Hat 2.0

Working the same pattern back to back is painfully boring. One would think it would be faster but no, it took longer, because I knew what it would look like finished and working on it was just..boring. No challenge at all. However, I don't love this finished product any less...

I could probably knit 10 more of these before it even starts to get cold, but now I'm on to bigger (better?) things

with this

Sparkle sparkle! I bought this yarn with the last of a gift card I had been hoarding since last Christmas. I love splurging on something that I wouldn't normally buy.

I am currently working on a shawl. I was having some difficulty lining up a spine pattern on it but I think I found some helpful advice on a forum. I started it and ripped out my progress 3 times already so I hope the 4th time will be it.

Finished hat

This knitted up quickly. I started on a Thursday and was binding off by Sunday.

I'm making another one with different yarn, then I will be starting a lace project with something sparkly!

We can’t plead ignorance, only indifference.

I have had a busy month preparing for a party, hosting the party, and being lazy after the party. We don't have people over very often and before last weekend I don't think we had ever had more than 4 people in our house at one time, so 20 was a new thing for me. Cooking for 20 people was also new. Cooking 13 lbs of pork for these people after reading this book was an ethical nightmare.

So, cooking that much pork after not eating meat for a month was interesting. I learned that whole foods rolled out a humane meat rating system, and that gave me a little peace. The meat I bought was a 3. I would have paid as much as I had to in order to buy a step 4 or 5 but this option was not available to me and I was short on time.

While I was reading this book and planning a menu I really couldn't figure out which opinion I take on this whole thing. Am I a vegetarian? No. Do I really enjoy meat enough to join a club for it, purchase quarters of animals and freeze them in the basement? No, not really. Can I live without it? Yes. Do I want to? ...eh? I don't know. sure. Will I miss it? No. But I still don't want to fully commit to anything and start calling myself a vegetarian. I don't want a label.

I am still feeling out this entire thing and figuring out what I can live without. This is a dietary decision as well as a social one. I admit that I enjoy the convenience and simplicity of being an omnivore. I don't think much about what I'm eating when I am eating alone but when I make meals for others or when I eat with people it becomes a larger issue of what to feed and what to say. I think a dialogue about where our food comes from and where it was before it was on the table is an important one. I think people have become willfully ignorant about it because we know it is wrong but we don't know how to change it.

Natural beauty products

I have been trying to adopt a more "natural" beauty routine. I guess I'm doing it because I try to think about what kind of food I put in my body, so I suppose I should also consider the fact that I slather myself with chemicals on a daily basis. The beauty industry is almost completley unregulated and it's pretty scary when you start to read ingredients and research them. Here are a few of the big offenders

1) Methyl, Propyl, Butyl, and Ethyl Paraben- Some combination of these synthetic ingredients are in almost EVERY skin and hair product made today. Widely known to be highly toxic and cause allergic/skin reactions. Companies use this dangerous ingredient, because it is extremely cheap and extends the shelf life of the product by inhibiting microbial growth.

2) Propylene Glycol -This Petroleum by-product is a synthetic ingredient used as a humectant. Also used as an INDUSTRIAL ANTI-FREEZE to de-ice airplanes. This toxic ingredient causes many allergic reactions. Research data states that through skin contact it can cause "liver abnormalities and kidney damage."

3) Synthetic Fragrances - Most Products will simply say "Fragrance" which means any combination of the cheapest 200 synthetic, toxic ingredients the company can find. Causes headaches, dizziness, rashes, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritations etc... 4) Triethanolamine (TEA)/Diethanolamine (DEA) - Used to adjust the pH balance, but toxic and causes eye problems, and dryness of skin and hair. DEA has been linked with kidney, liver and other organ damage according to several government-funded research. One study found that the topical application of DEA in rodents resulted in anemia, kidney degeneration, and nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord. (Melnick et al., 1994) Even more disturbing was that several animals died before the study ended. Approximately 200 million pounds of DEA are produced annually in the U.S., most of which goes into personal care products. (USITC, 1990).

5) Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea - Used as a a preservative, but a primary cause of contact dermatitis. You might see these toxic chemicals under the names Germall II and Germall 115, which release formaldehyde at just over 10°.

6)Phthalates: Some studies have shown compelling evidence of the dangers of specific phthalates. Environment California, a California based environmental advocacy group, reports that one of the dangers of phthalates includes early puberty in girls. As reported by them, a Puerto Rico study concluded that young girls who experienced premature breast development had seven times higher concentrations of diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) in their bodies than the control group. DEHP is a common plasticizer used in the hospital setting in medical tubing and blood bags.

Other studies have linked DEHP to male reproductive problems such as genital defects and reduced testosterone production. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified DEHP as a possible carcinogen based on animal studies.

Sounds awesome.

One of my first transitions has been deodorant. This is a bold move because I sweat a lot and it's gross. Natural deodorants do not prevent perspiration so they do nothing for moisture and are mainly for blocking the smell of body odor. My first product trial was Tom's of maine unscented deodorant. NO. No no no no a thousand times no. 3 hours into it I am soaking wet and I stink. I'm glad I was working from home that day.

Next product has been successful so far. It smells fantastic and works! Love it. Do not love the price tag so I hope it lasts a while.

Lavanilla healthy deodorant.

I will continue to try different products as I swap out my old products. I have never really worn lipstick so I did try some of the burts bees tinted lip products and I love them

I think the biggest challenge will be hair products, concealer, and foundation.

No vacation in 2011

Got my teeth cleaned today. The worst part of my day was not the cleaning itself, it was learning that my dentist had retired. He was my favorite. It's hard to explain to people the relationship we shared, but I will miss him more than I can express. Good Dentists are hard to find.

I will wait to pass judgment on the young man that is now my Dentist. Judgment will be coming soon since we will be spending a lot of time together starting next week.

I am aware of my dental issues and was prepared for the worst. I got the worst, and more! But I was prepared so it's not a big shock.
I scanned my treatment plan to share with the world. Check it out. I am going to laminate it and show it to people that complain about having one cavity that needs a filling.

No vacation in 2011, indeed.

The item "Bruxism Brace" is a fancy word for what I am now calling a "sexy mouth guard"
I will be sleeping with a mouth piece soon. Hot. Apparently I grind my teeth and this is partially contributing to the 3 teeth I have that are cracked--one is clean down the middle. Thanks well water+genetics+unconscious jaw grinding habit!

Textile art

The house has a massive stairwell that I have been struggling to decorate since we moved in. The wall on the landing goes up 12-15 feet? So I have been on the hunt for a very large piece of art or something to decorate this huge white space. It has been exhausting but I think I finally found a solution. For a while I was considering buying a museum banner from this website.

www.betterwall.com

At 7 feet tall a banner would fit the space well but the price was not right.

So here is my solution and project. The main wall will become an accent wall and I will make "art" by stretching several yards of printed fabric over a diy wood frame. Ikea had some decent fabrics but none that I wanted to see on a large scale. I looked around and decided on a pattern that is available from Marimekko. I have seen their stuff at crate and barrel in the form of bedding, table linens, and shower curtains, and I like their patterns. They are visually interesting without being too busy.

This is what I bought:

Upholstery fabric is not cheap but I only needed 2 yards to make a covering 4 feet wide x 6 feet tall. Total so far=$80

Now I am trying to find a paint color that is appropriate for the wall. I wanted to get a muted blue since ALL of the rooms in our house are gray or beige. I am sick of the neutral colors in our house. However, I can't find a blue that I like or a blue that is suitable for an area with no natural light whatsoever. I'm going to buy a sample of one more blue (I have bought about 6 blues already) and a quart of a silver metallic paint. I think the metallic could brighten the wall--but it's not a large leap from neutrals. I don't want the space to feel like a cave. Brian says I should leave the side walls and the connecting bedroom hallway white. I see his point--it will be a huge pain in the ass because most of it has to be done on a 10 foot ladder. I am undecided on that point.

This is the best picture I have of the space. It is from when we moved in.

The landings were floored in the summer of 09', Brian installed a spotlight and I picked up an Ernst Haeckel jellyfish print from zgallerie before they closed all of their east coast stores. Eventually the carpeting on the steps will be changed but not anytime soon.

If I can find a good color for that back wall the project should be done within 2 weeks!

Covet

In order from "most likely to buy" to "not happening"

Now that spring is here I am back into home project mode. About 3 weeks ago I got this crazy idea that my yard needed grass. Anyone with more than one dog knows that this is an exercise in futility when the yard is as small as mine, but I still spent 2 hours raking the mud and laying down seed. 3 weeks later I have baby grass and every time it gets stomped or soiled on by a dog I die a little inside. Still, I am happy to see a little bit of green in the mud pit.

A few things I hope to start, gather quotes for, and/finish by the end of the summer:

1) Painting and finding art for the enormous stairwell
2) Painting and changing the hardware on all the doors
3) The master bedroom
4) Replacing the fence or making a patio under the deck--no more mud pit!

Hello Again!

It's been almost a full year since I saw you last...

March 12&13th is the Maryland home and garden show and I have not attended since I picked up this lovely paph at that show two years ago. This year I am looking forward to acquiring another and some supplies for repotting this one. Here is to many more years together and many more blooms!

In knitting news...I have made about 4 things and am working on a big one. 3 cowls', one lost, one given to Brian, one to replace the first that I lost, and one "destroyed" cowl. Here is one of them while blocking. The blocking did nothing to stop the curl which is why I have no more pictures of it but the self striping yarn is so pretty I just had to share

This one is made with my new favorite yarn by Madelinetosh. If I could use this for every project forever until I no longer knit I would, it's that wonderful. The texture, the quality, the colors.. Outstanding

It is a wonderful face warmer when doubled up. Brian wears his everyday and can wrap it around his neck and face at the same time. He looks like a bank robber but it keeps him warm

Finally, my current project. A gift for a new little person. I have added another 5" and have about 2 or 3 skeins of yarn left to finish. I ran out of yarn at this point and had to special order more from the store...It was taking way too long so I did a rush order on amazon and got it within 2 days. I'm back to working on it now.

Stitch pattern close up:

Not too shabby for a free pattern

That's all for now!

Obsessed

I love my kindle and I can honestly say that I have never loved a gadget so much. Not my smart phone, not my ipod, not my gps. It's all about the kindle. I do not know what it is about this thing that makes reading so damn enjoyable. Maybe it's the fact that I can get a book suggestion, look it up, and have it delivered to the thing in less than a minute. Also, I can download knitting patterns to it instead of printing them out and carrying around pattern papers that get all wrinkly by the time I'm done with a project. It is the jam.

Love these guys

I have a friend that learned how to play the banjo because he said that a sad song could never be played on a banjo. I can't recall ever being very fond of much music that featured the banjo, but after hearing these guys a few months ago I understand what he meant.

Gifted:

Irish Hiking Scarf

River Run:

I wish I had some better pictures of these two but I snapped them 5 minutes before we were running out the door on Christmas.

I finished my destroyed cowl (it's gorgeous!)and will start another one for myself this week, then I should move on to arm warmers/mittens/or socks. I am not sure which direction I'm taking yet.

As for the New Year, I'm glad it's here. I don't have much to say about NYE. Last Monday I came down with a horrible cold and it knocked me on my ass for a full week. I'm still feeling residual effects of it and can't smell or taste anything. NYE I built a roaring fire, and watched Harry Potter 5 on the couch with the dogs. Brian went to a friends house party. It was actually a rather nice way to start off the year.

I don't normally make resolutions. There are a few things I'd like to do more of this year but I haven't firmly resolved to do them, I'm too ambivalent for resolutions.
I should probably walk my dogs more often, make more meals at home, and I would like to pay off my new car within the next 1-2 years rather than waiting the duration of the loan.

The one thing I'm really looking forward to in 2011? The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland_Sheep_and_Wool_Festival

I can't wait to see a bunch of sheep, buy some wool from local tradespeople and pet some alpacas
